SUNSHINE COAST GOURMET CLUB

We are a friendly, happy group who truly believe in their motto “Good Food, Good Wine and Good Company!”

In September 1979 a group of forward thinking women held the inaugural dinner of the Sunshine Coast Gourmet Club at Alfie’s in Woombye. Our club is a made up of women from many walks of life. Our membership includes Veterinarians, Educators, Nurses, Volunteers, Retirees, Widows, Divorcees, Carers, Admin Officers, Secretaries, Travellers, an Engineer, and Receptionists, all brought together by a passion for good food and wine and a pleasant evening out.

Over the 40 years we have seen many restaurants come and go and we note that Sunshine Coast Restaurants have become more sophisticated and upmarket since 1979. Restaurants on the Sunshine Coast have always prided themselves on using local produce.

Gourmet Club Membership

The Club has its own Constitution. Full membership of the club is 36.

Each member hosts a dinner once every two to three years. They select a restaurant of their own choice and work with the restaurateur to devise a menu which will showcase the restaurant. Our Cellar Mistress is involved in the selection of wines to complement the menu. The restaurant is evaluated and at the end of the Gourmet year a trophy is awarded to the winning restaurant.

01. DELICIOUS FOOD

There were lots of excited “oohs” and satisfied “aahs” across the room, as we took our first mouthful of the seared scallops, topped with the light pastry, and dressed with the soft, yet rich sauce. We loved the soft flavours of the dish, the succulent scallops complete with roe, the different textures to tempt – it was unanimous approval.

02. DIVINE WINE

The pinot was a perfect match for the veal medallions in wild mushroom and brandy sauce with pilaf rice, a dish which again drew high praise from across the group. Dessert, of cream cheese pancake in vanilla sauce, although very different, found its fans among our party.

03. SOCIAL EVENTS

Our members are all “super women” – working, raising families and doing community work. “But this is purely enjoyment and educational”. The last word should go to Muriel’s grandson, though, who perfectly summed up the gourmet club: “That’s not a meeting, Nan, you’re having too much fun!”
